    Aalto Lounge

    three star average

I have spent many a night at the Aalto Lounge. Great happy hour, good food menu and (usually) good music playing. The front room is non-smoking and the back room (where the bathrooms are located) is very dark and very smoky. The back room leads out to the patio which is NOT wheelchair accessible. The Aalto shares its awkward entrance with Stumptown coffee, which has a fairly steep incline. There's then an additional entrance on your right. The lounge itself is narrow and tends to fill up pretty quickly. Service is varied depending on who's working but usually friendly. Both bathrooms are wheelchair accessible but can be a bit dingy. ...Read full review >

Very cute, friendly cafe on Alberta St. serving sweet and savory crepes as well as cocktails and beer. They have a patio out front that is perfect for lounging around on lazy Sundays. Vendetta

    four star average

Vendetta is a clean, airy, non-smoking tavern that features a vintage shuffleboard table and a back patio. The menu is vegetarian-friendly (they have vegan 'sloppy janes'), $3 well drinks during happy hour and lots of beers to choose from. The bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and the staff is friendly. The only problem I could see a wheelchair-user having is there is a weight-bearing floor-to-ceiling post on the way to the bathroom. (So you might have to ask someone to move their bar stool so you can get by, no big deal). Vendetta is awesome. ...Read full review >

    St John's Theater

    three star average

Great independent movie theater in St. John's. There are 2 screens- and as Toshio's review mentioned there is a pretty massive/steep ramp leading up to one screen. This would definitely be difficult for people in manual chairs/those with mobility issues. I noticed they actually had a spare wheelchair hanging out on the ramp for people who might need one, which is very considerate. There's one accessible bathroom and that is the men's. It is fairly small, however. Staff there are usually friendly and helpful. Good pizza, good beer. ...Read full review >

    India Oven Authentic Cuisine

    three star average

Excellent Indian cuisine with a daily lunch buffet that will leave you stuffed for weeks. They have fantastic homemade Chai and their Chicken Tikka Masala is simply perfect. Lots of vegetarian options (Try the pakoras, samosas and Saag Paneer) and there's an outdoor patio to enjoy your meal on nice days. The service varies greatly depending on who's working. If it's the owner/chef, you're in good hands. If it's someone else, you may not be so lucky. It took years for India Oven to finally put a ramp to the entrance, which was annoying but the food is so good I'm just happy to be able to eat there. Bathrooms are not accessible, nor are they anywhere near to being clean. (They share a bathroom with the Hawthorne theater)....Read full review >

    Mississippi Station

    four star average

One Sunday I made plans to meet up with friends for brunch. We went to Mississippi Avenue and I noticed a huge, snaking line for the restaurant, Gravy. There was virtually no line for Mississippi Station and we quickly made our way to the comfy, outside back patio. We had an extremely nice waiter who brought us large bloody mary's and savory food. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich with pesto and feta on focaccia, while my friend got blueberry pancakes the size of hubcaps. Some of us ended up needing additional bloody mary's. I went back for happy hour recently and the service was not as friendly, and they brought my friend the wrong order. However, it was still enjoyable, cheap and the drinks were strong. Aside from the great food and drinks, the 2 bathrooms were wheelchair-accessible with grab bars. They may, however be somewhat snug for someone using a scooter to turn around completely in. There is also a small bump on the threshold leading out to the back patio area. ...Read full review >

    Stumptown Coffee Roasters

    three star average

Stumptown has the best coffee ever. Period. The Belmont location can be somewhat tricky to maneuver, however. Customers using manual wheelchairs might experience difficulty with the entrance as it's a somewhat steep incline (though I have seen manual wheelchair users enter). The space is also very narrow and awkwardly laid out. To get to the end of the coffee line you have a snug path to make your way past every other customer in front of you. That said, the baristas are usually very helpful to me and every single one is easy on the eyes. Occasionally you may experience some attitude but that comes with the hipster territory. ...Read full review >

    Bagdad Theatre & Pub

    three star average

The Bagdad is allegedly haunted by ghosts but that shouldn't stop you from going there. You can watch a cheap movie while drinking a beer from the pub (instead of sneaking one in your purse like usual). A very steep and winding ramp leads up to the theater, so those with mobility issues and/or manual chairs are in for quite a workout. The cafe/pub has a good selection of beers, but the cocktails are on the spendier side (around $7). Both of the bathrooms in the pub are wheelchair accessible, and the service is usually helpful and friendly....Read full review >

    Hoda's Middle-Eastern Cuisine

    four star average

Hoda's is a casual, comfortable Lebanese restaurant located on SE Belmont. It's vegetarian/vegan friendly and usually quite delicious. (Trimet must be a fan because the #15 drops you off directly in front of the restaurant). The mezza platter is a must and you can choose from either the carnivore or vegetarian version. There is also a wide selection of sandwiches, kabobs, salads, and pizzas. The bathrooms are wheelchair-accessible and the front door has an automatic door opener. However, as someone who lived on Belmont for 2 years I never experienced the pleasure of the automatic door actually working. Also, be prepared to pay with cash. ...Read full review >

    Dad's Restaurant & Lounge

    three star average

Dad's is the 2nd strangest place to visit in St. John's (first place goes to Pattie's Home Plate Cafe that hosts the Bigfoot Society meetings once a month). Dad's is separated into 2 distinct areas: the family style restaurant featuring live lounge music while you dine (you may be serenaded at your table), and the very smoky, dark, semi-creepy bar. Everything about Dad's will make you think you entered a time warp into the 1970s. My experiences there have been nothing but interesting. The service has always been extremely personable and you are guaranteed to have an excellent time people-watching. I would never, ever eat the food again. I made that mistake once and lived to regret it. However, I'm happy to drop by, drink cheap whiskey and entertain myself listening to the regulars attempt to chat up the waitresses. One note on accessibility: the wheelchair-accessible restrooms are in the main dining area, not the bar location. ...Read full review >

Pattie's Home Plate Cafe and Fountain

    four star average

By far the strangest place I've been to in PDX. Pattie's is many beautiful things: a diner, a store that sells bizarre, dusty crap you'd never want, a "costume shop," AND host to monthly meetings for the Bigfoot Society. If this isn't enough to entice you, they also hold a sock-hop one or 2 Saturdays a month. Pretty much everyone who goes to Pattie's is around 75 years old, with the exception of me and my friends. The food is exactly what you'd expect it to be. All in all, Pattie's in an experience, and one that every Portlander should take part in. They also have a FREE jukebox! Sadly their bathroom is inaccessible. ...Read full review >

Not really a place I'm in love with, but it's fine for drinking some beers and eating small snacks. Plus it's the spot of the very first Where's Lulu meeting, which makes it automatically cool. Very open and comfortable with a lot of space to move around in, plus a full bar to choose from. There's no smoking and it's easy to get to on the #44 bus line. Kelly's is a very smoky, loud, divey biker bar that features live music. The bar has been around for years and still has a trapdoor that once led to the Shanghai tunnels. Lots of beers on tap, a full bar and they serve cheap, greasy breakfast all day. Service has been friendly the few times I visited. The bathrooms are not very wheelchair accessible (I couldn't shut the bathroom stall door as it was too narrow a space). Screen Door Restaurant

    four star average

Screen door is an excellent (and very popular) spot for brunch, as well as a great place for dinner and drinks. Specializing in southern cuisine, they are deliberate in using organic, local ingredients to create absolutely tasty and gigantic dishes. I ate one of the specials, a vegetarian goat cheese omelet with potatoes that just writing about is making me hungry. My friend chose the insanely huge buttermilk battered chicken and waffles (one of their signature dishes), which I also took part in eating. Her meal was easily three meals in one, meaning you get your money's worth. The restaurant was extremely crowded, and we ate on the outdoor patio, which was fairly cramped. They have 2 wheelchair accessible bathrooms (hidden behind a curtain inside). Overall service was very helpful and friendly and I will be returning very soon for some fried chicken. ...Read full review >

Side Street is very open, has lots of good lighting thanks to the huge windows, and is a more relaxed alternative to the belmont's inn and the aalto lounge located within stumbling distance. They have pool tables and a jukebox (which could use some musical adjustments). Their culinary specialty is cheesy tater tots with lots of different sauces, and they also have small pizzas. Miss Delta is a restaurant/bar owned by the original owners of the Delta cafe on Woodstock and has brought back the quality that has diminished somewhat in their former southeast eatery. As you would expect, the dishes are all southern and/or cajun influenced. Expect very large portions, interesting cocktails, and lots and lots of meat (fried chicken, ribs, pan fried oysters). There are some great veggie options like fried okra, black eyed pea fritters, collard greens and one of my all time favorite foods: hush puppies. Very tasty, fresh, but overpriced Mexican restaurant on Albina. The owners strive to use local ingredients, and the service is very very friendly. Their specialty is the tamarind margarita, and they offer a decent happy hour deal ($5 margaritas and small plates of food). I would definitely go back for happy hour just to take advantage of the cheaper prices and not spend $14 on a small but delicious dinner. Me and Lulu co-founder Toshio stumbled into this place during Pride week and both agreed it was decorated like a gay Chili's. This was a negative for him, and a positive for me. The bartender was probably the friendliest dude I've met in PDX and the clientele seemed like regulars who were well acquainted with each other. The entrance has a slight bump that could be a potential barrier, but the inside is fairly large and roomy. There was lots of bad disco playing so we didn't stay long. One drawback is the bathroom(s). There's an unlocked, large, accessible men's bathrooms with NO DOORS, meaning you have to pee in front of everybody, which clearly I won't do. HOWEVER, there's another locked bathroom that's also accessible, but you have to get the key from the rad bartender. This is where the few women who hang out there pee, fyi. ...Read full review >

They serve food, wine, beer, coffee and espresso drinks and have many amazing flavors of gelato (tira misu, limoncella). The lunch menu is comprised mostly of salads and paninis, but they also have pizza and pasta dishes. I had the spinach salad with chicken, pine nuts, grilled pears and bacon, which was good but not amazing. Some of my friends ordered paninis (caprese with prosciuto, portabello mushroom panini) that came with a side salad. Portions were on the small side, and their was some understandable grumbling. Darcy's Restaurant

    three star average

Neighborhood bar/restaurant on Lombard with a surprising amount of traffic coming through (UP students, elderly nopo residents, and when I was there, bikers). The food is standard diner food and very cheap. Service was friendly but a bit slow. I'll definitely go back for additional greasy brunches. The atmosphere is low-key and suited for leisurely coffee. Good place to take your Granny, especially if she likes Keno! Bathroom to the right was wheelchair accessible. ...Read full review >

    Crow Bar

    four star average

Located on the ever-expanding North Mississippi Avenue, Crow Bar lies somewhere between hipster dive bar and neighborhood pub. Visit it twice and you will no doubt recognize a few faces and/or trucker hats. Depending on what day and time you drop by the noise level ranges from calm and low-key to loud and rambunctious. There are 2 wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, but you'll have to work your way through the narrow space of the bar to the very back of the room. Crow bar offers a pool table, margaritas on tap (!) and one of the best jukeboxes in Portland. If you're lucky, Mike the owner will be tending bar; it's likely he'll learn your name and greet you with it the next time you visit. ...Read full review >

    Virgo and Pisces

    four star average

Those who know me know that I'm an astrology buff. Virgo and Pisces was therefore a logical choice for a happy hour excursion. I really enjoyed myself here- great cocktails and tasty food. My friend and I shared several delicious appetizers: caesar salad, egg rolls and some fantastic pot stickers. Everyone was very friendly (although I got called out by an employee for saying 'effing' instead of dropping an actual F-bomb). There are 2 entrances, one was too tricky for me to open the doors, but I moved down to the 2nd entrance and it was fine. The wheelchair accessible bathroom was HUGE, but they had some crap in the hallway leading to it that reduced the amount of space to move/turn around in. Service was very amiable and I'll definitely be back. On the #17 bus line....Read full review >

    Tandoor LLC

Tandoor Indian Kitchen has quickly become a personal favorite of mine. Situated downtown at 4th and Oak, Tandoor offers a fantastic, cheap lunch buffet ($5-$8) with alternating vegetarian and meat dishes and some traditional mainstays (luckily the Chicken Tikka Masala is always there). It's delicious and will undoubtedly force you to keep refilling your plate. The entrance has a fairly steep incline, which makes it difficult to open the door. Once inside it's open, spacious and comfortable (although probably crowded). And If you're dining alone, you can entertain yourself with the Bollywood movies playing on the restaurant's TV. ...Read full review >

This place is soooo not accessible. It is stairs galore. I can't comment on the service since I can't get into the restaurant but I can relay some of my friends' experiences: Rude, unhelpful staff that glares at the customers. Regarding the quality of the food, I've gotten takeout before and it tasted bland and stale. This was very disappointing as me and Indian food have a long and beautiful history together. Very cute and cozy SE bar right off Belmont. I felt comfortable immediately and I was the only person there (it was 3pm on a Saturday, however...). The interior is decorated with various weird kitch you'd find at garage sales, antique shops or on cross-country trips. It almost feels like you're in some strange old lady's house, except there's a pool table, free jukebox with good music and lots of booze. The service is very friendly and welcoming. I had a great time there. The only drawback is the restrooms are not accessible but *could* be very easily. This is my little piece of St. John's heaven. Santa Cruz has the BEST BURRITOS!! I find myself craving them constantly and have to eat here at least once a week. A gigantic veggie burrito is only $3.50 and contains all the avocado you could ever want. It's hard to beat that. They also serve tortas, tacos, and meat burritos: chicken, pork, and uh don't forget tongue... The atmosphere is completely nonexistent: horrible fluorescent lighting and a strange mural of an eagle about to make off with a lamb (don't really get it but whatever, just get yr food to go). The bathrooms are totally inaccessible- there isn't even a toilet seat in the women's room. Santa Cruz is no frills but totally delicious. I've only gotten to eat here once and it was because somebody else paid. The Heathman restaurant located in the famous Heathman Hotel is on the spendier side, serving up some tasty and fancy meals. I had a fantastic dungeness crab salad with avocado and mango, (so good) which when presented to me looked like a piece of art. Service was very friendly, very helpful and I got to pretend I was a rich person for an hour. Accessibility is somewhat awkward. People who can't do stairs/use wheelchairs need to use the lift, so one of the hotel doormen will have to operate it for you. McMenamin's theater and pub in St John's. Pretty standard yet slightly overpriced bar food and of course, McMenamin's beer (Hammerhead and Ruby are always tasty). Overall accessibility is pretty dismal: The wheelchair accessible entrance is through the back patio and pretty narrow; then there's a steep ramp to the door and not much room to actually open the door with. Proper Eats

Proper Eats is a friendly, predominantly vegan restaurant and grocery in St. John's that serves beer and wine and features live music. They're very dedicated to making a positive contribution to the Portland community and customers are free to use Oregon Trail cards to buy groceries. If it's busy, it can be a tight squeeze into the seating area as it's fairly narrow. And given the small space it can get loud in the evenings if there is a live (most likely hippie) band playing. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms, but the toilets may be awkwardly tall for some. In terms of service, I've found the staff to be extremely nice and helpful on every occasion. Piper, one of the owners even surprised my friend and I with free cookies after we had loitered there for a few hours one lazy Saturday. The food is always fresh, healthy and generously portioned. (The NoPo burrito is a personal favorite). Thanh Thao serves affordable "Thai and Vietnamese cuisine", though more in the vein of what Americans expect to eat at an 'Asian restaurant,' i.e., many dishes closely resemble or are in fact Chinese food. That said, the food is generally satisfying, well-portioned and cheap. I liked it enough to spend a birthday there one year. There's lots of options for carnivores and vegetarians alike, and they are big proponents of 'mock meat.' Good spring rolls, pad thai and curries- though they are not at all spicy. The daily lunch specials are always a good bet and they have excellent hot and sour soup. The service is a crapshoot, you'll either get incredibly nice servers or ones who ignore you completely. The entrance is also very, very awkward for anyone using a wheelchair (2 different doors to open, a steep ramp in front) and I would not recommend it based on accessibility.
